LTA Connect: Employer and employee benefits of mentoring schemes
Presented by Rosie Alexander this webinar considered the benefits and challenges of engaging in mentoring as an employee (or as an employer). The webinar drew on a research project conducted with UK employers who engage in mentoring with young people. This research focused on young people aged 13-19, however some of the findings are transferable to other forms of mentoring schemes.

The findings of the research project show that key benefits of mentoring are connected with working with diverse individuals and handling challenges and unpredictabilities in the relationship. The value for employees of mentoring is particularly related to personal development. For employers, the development of a workforce with high levels of empathy and ability to work with diversity is particularly valued. However, the challenges and unpredictabilities in mentoring can also pose risks for the breakdown of mentoring relationships. Therefore, this seminar will consider how mentoring schemes and mentors can be effectively supported and briefed, and how mentors can prepare themselves for mentoring.
The webinar will be particularly useful for university staff considering engaging in mentoring, and for staff who wish to promote mentoring schemes for students to employers.
Presenter
Rosie Alexander joined the LTA as Senior Lecturer(Research) in Spring 2019. Rosie’s research focuses on careers and employability education, as well as careers guidance. She specialises in the role of geographical space in education and employment pathways, andpolicy and practice responses to this. Rosie’s interests particularly lie in island locations and small states, as well as issues of social andspatial justice. She is looking forward to taking these areas of research forward within her role at the LTA, as part of our work for the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
