The textbook engages with areas which are frequently overlooked, such as the Balkan region, the Scandinavian kingdoms, and the Crusader States in the Latin East, as well as those realms you would expect to see, to help give a more nuanced view of the varieties of the theory and practice of monarchy in this era. It does this both in the main text and through the use of Spotlights and Area Studies by a much wider range of contributors to the textbook to provide more rounded coverage, as well as being framed by a prologue about the pre-1000 Carolingian legacy and an epilogue positioning the subject in a global medieval context.
The co-authors were led in this mission by Dr Elena Woodacre (University of Winchester and founder of the Royal Studies Network), and Elena (Ellie) will be accompanied by Dr Lucy Dean (UHI Centre for History) and Dr Patrik Pastrnak (Department of History, Palacký University Olomouc, Czech Republic) for this session.
They will speak about the aims of the textbook, a discussion of some of the key themes and subjects covered, and comments on the process of putting together a volume with over 30 contributors and working with the assistance of wonderful volunteer student readers, which included UHI students amongst their number.
We look forward to welcoming you online for this exciting book launch & author conversation event.
