A Pirate's Life - Walk in the footsteps of Orkney's Most Notorious Pirate

On June 11, 1725, the notorious pirate John Gow faced his fate at the Execution Dock in Wapping, London. His execution marked the end of a thrilling yet turbulent journey as he was left to be washed by the tide before being tarred and displayed in chains as a cautionary tale for aspiring pirates.

Just a year earlier, Gow and his crew aboard the 'Revenge' had boldly raided along the beautiful Iberian coast before heading north to Orkney. Remarkably, over 300 years later, Gow’s legendary exploits continue to capture imaginations and inspire fascination, leaving an enduring imprint on history that resonates even today!

In celebration of the 300th anniversary of Gow’s passing, the UHI Institute for Northern Studies has partnered with the J. Gow Distillery to create the exciting John Gow Heritage Trail! This trail, available in both physical and downloadable PDF formats, offers a captivating overview of Gow’s fascinating story, beautifully woven into the stunning Orcadian landscape.

For those eager to step into Gow’s world, the trail reveals insights into his remarkable life, the brief yet thrilling journey of his ship, the 'Revenge', and the dramatic events that unfolded in Orkney. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore a gripping chapter of island history while visiting the significant locations featured in the tale. Happy exploring!

The UHI Institute for Northern Studies (INS) is a research and teaching institute within the University of the Highlands and Islands. While INS staff conduct research worldwide and teach students from all four corners of the globe, the department’s headquarters are in Kirkwall with additional centres located in UHI Perth and UHI Shetland.

INS offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as commercial consultation and research. The research for the John Gow Heritage Trail was conducted by Andrew Lind and Lynn Campbell.

The J. Gow Distillery was founded in 2016 by Collin van Schayk in Lamb Holm. Since then, the distillery has produced a rich array of rums, many of which draw inspiration from Gow himself. Not only does Collin craft every drop of J. Gow Rum and run the business, but he also designed all the labels, branding, and graphics himself – including this heritage trail pamphlet!
