Institute for Northern Studies

We are internationally renowned for our innovative undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research programmes in Culture and Heritage, Orkney and Shetland Studies, Highlands and Islands Literature, Scottish Heritage, Viking Studies and Island Studies.

INS led the UHI Area Studies submission to REF 2021 which came 1^st in Scotland overall and 1^st equal in the UK for research impact.
