Professor Andrew Jennings Contributes Foreword to Landmark New Book on Peninsulas

Professor Andrew Jennings, Professor in Island Studies at the UHI Institute for Northern Studies, has written the foreword to a major new book, Peninsulas: A Geography of Almost Islands.

Published by Routledge, part of the Taylor & Francis Group, the volume provides the first comprehensive geographical study of peninsulas. It examines how these “almost islands” shape politics, identity, nation-building and engineering ambitions around the world.

Bringing together 19 chapters from multiple disciplines, the book explores three interconnected themes: divisions within peninsulas, tensions across their isthmuses, and the political and engineering possibilities that isthmuses inspire.

The volume demonstrates that, like other geographical features, peninsulas influence—but do not determine—human choices. Through theoretically grounded and geographically diverse research, it offers new ways of understanding how land, water and borders affect identity, territorial change, governance and power.

Written primarily for students and scholars of geography, geopolitics and international relations, the book will also be relevant to those working in political science, anthropology, history and island studies. Its global scope and accessible style will appeal equally to general readers interested in place, identity and borders.
