Postgraduate research

Our postgraduate research community continues to grow, with students guided by researchers who work across teams, networks and locations throughout the region and internationally, building knowledge and skills in a supportive research culture. These are the researchers who ensured three quarters of our research was rated 'internationally excellent' or 'world leading' in the most recent assessment exercise.

Postgraduate research programmes typically require 12 to 36 months of critical investigation and research into a specific topic while supervised by a specialised academic. Our Masters by Research (MRes) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees are then assessed by the final piece of research and your understanding of related investigative methods.

Graduate School

The university’s Graduate School is the focal point for the support, development and administration of our MRes and PhD students.

Our specialised programmes are designed to help students improve their English for study, work, general life in the UK, and intercultural communication.

Student Alberto in the lab at the Scottish Association for Marine Science

“I had considered St Andrews and Edinburgh as other options, but after visiting the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), especially seeing how small the campus was and how impressive it's research centre is, it was a no-brainer ...it makes it so much easier to have a dialogue and a rapport with your lectures and the researchers.”
