Dr Mei-Li Roberts

Dr Mei-Li Roberts joined the University of the Highlands and Islands in 2008 as programme leader for the BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies and, until 2014, Research Fellow in the Centre for Rural Childhood. In addition to the BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies, she is a module leader and teaches across a range of programmes including the Graduate Apprenticeship Early Learning and Childcare, Masters in Tertiary and Higher Education and Masters in Children and Young People Participation and Leadership. She is also a mentor on the ALPINE (Accredited Learning, Professional development and Innovation in Education) scheme and a member of Biog (Brightspace Implementation Operational Group).

 Mei-Li’s background is Social Anthropology, she completed her PhD at the University of St Andrews, entitled Translating Identities: 'Being a missionary' in Papua New Guinea. She had a particular interest in the children of missionaries and following on from this held a research fellowship at the Universities of Dundee and St Andrews,  Changing Lifestyle in Children - All Change: Can This Reduce Cardiovascular Risk? and then a research fellowship at the University of Edinburgh:  Parents' & teenagers' conceptions of diet, weight & health: Does class matter?  Her research interests include conceptions of diet, weight, health and physical activity amongst children, young people and their families in Scotland, Christianity, missionaries, translation and identity in Melanesia and pedagogical research relating to transitions to degree study, graduate attributes and student engagement.

 Mei-Li is a member of the Association of Social Anthropologists and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She also holds a PGCert in Education (Distinction).
