Training courses for the Third Sector in Highland from January 2022

The university is offering a limited number of free places on a range of short courses from January 2022. Working with the Third Sector Interface Highland courses have been identified to support the development requirements of members. Courses are free of charge and are delivered online. These courses are open to TSI members whose primary place of residence is Scotland. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis as applications are received and assessed.

Note: you cannot apply if you are currently studying full-time within the university partnership.

An Introduction to global environmental issues

This introductory course explores global problems such global warming and climate change, environmental degradation, water scarcity, pollution, population pressure, mass tourism and the global energy problem. You will gain an understanding of the importance of environmental issues and their interaction with human activity at a local and global level.

Study time: 200 hours of study, which will include online tutor supported study through the university’s virtual learning environment, self-directed study and assessment.

Level:  Undergraduate module. SCQF level 7, 20 credits

Entry requirement: Applicants should ideally possess SCQF level 6 qualifications, such as Scottish Highers at grade C or above, or equivalent, however qualifications and experience of applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

Duration: 14 weeks

Communities have a key role to play in the development of a net zero society. Are you keen to discover more about how renewable energy production can play a central role in community development? This module will provide you with an understanding of community energy in relation to policy (and other) drivers, energy systems and project development.

The module is aimed at those involved in community groups developing local solutions to help meet net zero targets and those engaged in supporting roles in community development, with renewable energy developers and consultancies, and in strategic and local planning and policy organisations.

Study time: 200 hours of study, which will include online tutor supported study through the university's virtual learning environment, self-directed study and assessment.

You will explore the distinctive features and characteristics of these communities and the range of policies and initiatives being implemented for rural and urban development and regeneration.

This module provides an introduction to consumer theory and practise within marketing. You will explore the processes involved in understanding buyer behaviour, both consumer and business, and implications for marketing strategies. The module also considers how understanding consumer behaviour and customer experience supports generating and retaining business.

Study time: 200 hours of study, which will include teaching, self-directed study and assessment.  You will be required to attend a two-hour video-conference class each Monday 1-3.

Level: undergraduate module. SCQF 8, 20 credits

Entry requirement: Evidence of qualifications required for degree level study. Relevant work experience will also be considered for entry to this course

Responsible leadership and management for contemporary business CPD award

This CPD course is aimed at business managers or leaders interested in learning leadership and management through a responsible and ethical lens. It is designed to help businesses prepare for a sustainable future in an era focused on social and environmental responsibility.

Designed in partnership with a globally focused business to develop key management skills such as project management, finance, staff motivation and organisational performance, as well as leadership and management theories, it also looks at stakeholder management, innovation, and future-readiness – all of which is underpinned by responsible and ethical practice.

Study time: 200 hours (for each of the three modules), which will include teaching, self-directed study and assessment

Level: three undergraduate modules. SCQF 8, 60 credits

Entry requirement: Applicants should be working within a leadership or managerial role and ideally possess SCQF level 6 qualifications, such as 2 Scottish Highers at grade C or above, or equivalent. Applicants with other relevant qualifications or experience will also be considered on an individual basis.

Duration: Six months to complete the three modules for the full CPD award

On this module you will explore a variety of definitions and accounts of health including personal, lay and professional. You will gain an understanding of the need for a holistic and multidisciplinary response to health issues across the age range, for individuals, families and communities. The particular focus on health inequalities and social determinants of health will support your understanding of the scope of the subject, which is further developed through an overview of relevant Scottish/UK health policy.
