Coaching and Mentoring Skills in Higher Education

Micro group teaching, 1:1 and peer to peer learning, have been discovered to be the most efficient and motivational of all educational interventions. The commitment to ‘deep’ learning and the potential for innovative questions and solutions to appear is much higher when using coaching techniques. However, these key skills are typically only encountered in the worlds of business, sport, the creative industries and the arts (unless you were a student at Oxford or Cambridge). But now many universities are realising the benefits of coaching and mentoring for the supervision of research, teaching, facilitation and peer to peer communication for personal development.

In this fast paced workshop you will be given an introduction to the following:

• how to set up and run a mentoring/coaching session
• how to design a series of regular coaching sessions
• how to agree goals and measure progress through action
• active listening and reflective skills
• systems for giving and receiving feedback that motivates development
• GROW and STAR coaching models
• using ‘thinking hats’ and other creative agents to unstick sticky problems
• gravity problems
• how to empower learning through questions and not statements
• how mentoring works in reverse and why our imperfections are often our USP

Iain is a training consultant who runs his own micro-business. He was a postgraduate student at UHI in Inverness, Sheffield Hallam university and the universities of Northumbria and York. He is a qualified teacher, Research Council Vitae tutor, training consultant with NHS Scotland health partnerships and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Iain coaches and mentors early career researchers and PhD students and recently helped set up a large mentoring project run by the student association at Queen Mary University, London, to encourage young people from ethnic minority groups in the East of London to consider applying for courses at their local university under a new access scheme. Iain recently returned from visiting former students in Berlin who now run an environmental skills social enterprise and a political and policy think tank. He is currently working with the universities of Edinburgh, Strathclyde and UHI.

To register for this workshop please email lta@uhi.ac.uk.  People who are mentoring through one or more of the three strands in the University Mentoring Scheme will be given priority booking.  All other places will be given on a first come first serve basis.  When booking a place please indicate if you plan to attend in person (Learning Lab, An Lochran) or by videoconference.
