An Introduction to teaching excellence awards in Higher Education: NTFs and CATE

In this one hour webinar Alex Walker (Professional Recognition and Development Lead, LTA) will provide an overview of the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFs) and the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE). Managed by Advance HE, The NTF Scheme celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in Higher Education (HE). The Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) recognises and rewards collaborative work that has had a demonstrable impact on teaching and learning and highlights the key role of teamwork in higher education.

Session Outline

NTF (for individuals) and CATE (for teams) are open to colleagues in any role in the institution who have made a significant contribution to student learning and outcomes and can demonstrate its impact above and beyond their immediate context. As well as staff who are directly responsible for the design and delivery of higher education learning and teaching, these awards are open to staff supporting or leading the development of higher education learning and teaching (including through staff development) and supporting wider aspects of the higher education student experience (e.g. through learning technology, information literacy, or learning development).

The awards run annually and NTF and CATE regulations, the university is allowed to put forward up to three nominations for NTFs and one nomination for CATE for consideration by the external NTF/CATE awards panel.  Nominees are supported through mentoring and writing workshops to submit applications in March.

This webinar will explore the criteria for NTFs and CATE so that colleagues can consider submitting a proposal of interest to become a nominee for future rounds of the awards.  The webinar will also provide information on how colleagues should gather evidence of ‘impact’, ‘value’ and ‘reach’ against the criteria.

Alex's main responsibilities within the LTA include leading professional recognition and development opportunities for UHI colleagues.  This includes leading UHI submissions to the Advance HE National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) and Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellent (CATE), as well as coordinating ALPINE (Accredited Learning, Professional Development and Innovation in Education) and supporting applicants throughout the ALPINE application process.  Alex also has responsibility for leading, facilitating and coordinating events which promote and share good practice in educational research, and learning and teaching across the university. 

Alex also coordinators the University Mentoring Scheme which offers a range of mentoring opportunities for university colleagues through four distinct strands, comprising Research, Learning and Teaching Enhancement, Professional Recognition and Scholarship Development.  As well as coordinating the scheme Alex is the lead for the Professional Recognition strand. Alex has mentored colleagues applying for Certified Membership of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT), HEA Fellowships through ALPINE, through direct applications to Advance HE for Principal Fellowship HEA and internationally through a global funded research project exploring professional recognition and mentoring with colleagues at the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB).

Alex gained Principal Fellowship HEA (PFHEA) in 2021, and in 2022 completed a Masters in Tertiary and Higher Education, receiving a distinction for a dissertation researching mentoring for professional recognition. Alex is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and Certified Member of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT).
