Amy Owens named UHI Perth Student of the Year 2026

Amy demonstrated sustained academic excellence throughout her course

UHI Perth has announced Amy Owens as this year’s UHI Perth Student of the Year 2026, recognising her exceptional academic achievement, resilience and contribution to the university community.

Amy began her journey at UHI Perth on the Level 4 Next Steps programme without formal qualifications. Over six years, she has progressed to achieve a First-Class Honours Degree in Sociology and Politics, demonstrating sustained academic excellence throughout. Ronnie Dewar, Lecturer explained:

"Her work is characterised by originality, intellectual curiosity and a high level of critical analysis, with her dissertation described by her supervisor as groundbreaking. A committed and engaged student, Amy consistently contributed to learning activities, maintained excellent attendance and supported her peers, helping to foster a positive and collaborative learning environment. She is an exceptional student who has consistently exceeded expectations."

Having grown up in foster care, Amy’s journey reflects remarkable determination. She has navigated significant personal challenges, including the demands of motherhood and the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, while continuing to excel and meet every academic deadline. Reflecting on her achievement, Amy said:

“The encouragement and unwavering support of my lecturers have allowed me to progress and achieve things I never thought possible. It was incredibly thoughtful of my lecturers and Ronnie to put forward the nomination and I hope I can maintain the same standards in my postgraduate studies!”

Amy will formally receive her award at the UHI Perth graduation ceremony on Thursday 8 October 2026.
