Katie, who is studying BSc (Hons) Archaeological Science, has consistently produced work of an exceptional standard, demonstrating originality and creativity across her degree.

Alongside her academic success, Katie is also recognised for her resilience and positive attitude. Despite undergoing surgery and experiencing multiple family bereavements during her degree, she remained focused on her studies and worked collaboratively to overcome the challenges she faced.

Outside the classroom, Katie has volunteered at the Skaill excavations on Rousay, where she has become a skilled field archaeologist. During last summer's excavation, she uncovered a carved red sandstone head that attracted widespread local, national and international media attention and even led to tourists recognising her while visiting the site.

She was nominated by Benjamin Elliott, lecturer and archaeology undergraduate programme leader at UHI Orkney, who said:

"Katie has been a brilliant student throughout her time with us at UHI, but this last year she has truly shone. She has been a pleasure to teach; always thoughtful and forthcoming in discussion and considerate of her peers in conversation. She has combined exceptional academic ability with quiet confidence, professionalism and genuine kindness towards others - both in the classroom and in the field.

“She has produced outstanding work throughout the year, often in the face of adversity and whilst balancing a host of out-of-study commitments. For her kindness, academic excellence and personal resilience, she is an exceptionally deserving UHI Orkney Student of the Year."

Katie said:

"To receive this award is truly an honour. I am incredibly grateful for the support and encouragement I have received throughout my degree, and my sincerest thanks go to the staff of the UHI Archaeology Institute. Their guidance, patience and enthusiasm for their subject have left a lasting impact on me, and I have gained invaluable skills and a wealth of knowledge.

"It has not been an easy couple of years, but the support I have received has been exceptional. It has enabled me to achieve a degree that, on several occasions, I doubted would be possible.

"Studying with UHI has given me the opportunity to pursue my interests at a pace that was sustainable, with the flexibility to continue my studies while navigating multiple unexpected challenges. Transferring my studies to UHI Orkney two years ago was one of the best decisions I have made. Since moving to Orkney, I have felt genuinely welcomed and supported as part of the wider community.

"Receiving this award reflects the encouragement and support I have received from my family, friends, UHI staff and my fellow students, and I am deeply thankful to everyone who has been part of my journey."

The UHI Student of the Year awards celebrate students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement, dedication and impact during their studies, recognising not only academic success but also the personal qualities that contribute to their communities and future professions.

All Student of the Year winners from across the UHI partnership receive a £100 prize and go forward to be considered for the Overall UHI Student of the Year, which will be announced soon.

Katie will formally receive her award at the UHI Orkney graduation ceremony in Kirkwall on Friday 20 November.
