UHI and Space Scotland launch space discovery kits for schools
The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), together with Space Scotland’s New Voices in Space working group, has launched a new Space Forces Discovery Kit to inspire the next generation of the space workforce.
The kits offer a fun, hands-on way for learners to explore the science of space, with UHI STEM Outreach Coordinators delivering interactive sessions directly in classrooms. Through practical activities and experiments, learners can investigate how forces shape our universe while building curiosity and confidence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.
Aligned with Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence, the sessions have been tailored specifically for Early and First Level learners.
First Level learners will have the opportunity to:
- Create and launch their own stomp rocket
- Design a parachute to safely return a capsule to Earth
- Explore different forces using a large play parachute
- Discover space-related skills and careers through a selection of engaging, space-themed books
Early Level learners will have the opportunity to:
- Observe the rotation of the Earth, moon and sun
- Dress characters to suit the seasons
- Create impact craters on the moon
- Discover and design constellations
- Enjoy storytelling and related hands-on activities
Dr Athina Frantzana, Chair of New Voices in Space at Space Scotland, said:
“Too often, space is seen as a career for a select few; but in reality, it’s a sector powered by a wide range of skills and perspectives. When children, parents, and teachers only see a narrow view, it limits who feels they belong; and that lack of visibility becomes a barrier before ambition even has a chance to form.
“That’s why early outreach matters. At New Voices in Space, we believe that when we spark curiosity from primary school, we don’t just introduce children to space - we broaden their sense of what’s possible, build confidence, challenge the stereotypes that can quietly limit aspiration, and ensure every child sees that a future in space is not only possible, but open to them.
“We are excited to see the impact of this partnership with the UHI STEM team and the inspiring programme they have developed. Thank you to our funder, the UK Space Agency, for making this initiative possible.”
Dawne Bloodworth, Head of STEM Development at UHI added:
“Working with Space Scotland, we are delighted to launch the Space Forces Discovery Kit. Through our STEM Outreach Programme, we bring hands-on, engaging learning into classrooms, helping to address skills gaps in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Over the past two and a half years, we have engaged with more than 40,000 children across the Highlands and Islands region.
“Our locally based UHI STEM Outreach Coordinators work alongside teachers to deliver fun, practical sessions at no cost to schools, while also supporting teachers to build confidence in STEM.”
The Space Forces Discovery Kit forms part of UHI’s continued commitment to widening access to STEM education and supporting young learners across Scotland to develop the skills needed for future careers.
Teachers and practitioners across the Highlands and Islands, Moray, Perthshire and north-east Aberdeenshire can now access a Space Forces Discovery Kit through their local STEM coordinator.
