UHI Centre for Rural Health Sciences names its Student of the Year
A final-year optometry student at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) has been named as the UHI Centre for Rural Health Sciences Student of the Year in recognition of his academic achievement, resilience and compassion for others.
Michael Binnie, originally from Dundee and now living in Inverness, overcame significant personal challenges during his studies, including taking a year out following a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Returning to university required considerable courage and determination, including joining a different cohort and rebuilding his academic and clinical confidence.
Dr Joel Somerville, optometry lecturer and Michael’s personal academic tutor, said:
“What stands out is how positively he approached this challenge. Since returning, he has not only re-engaged with his studies but thrived. His resilience and ability to keep moving forward, even when things have been difficult, is incredibly admirable.”
“Michael will make an excellent optometrist, not only because of his knowledge and skills, but because of his compassion and genuine commitment to others. He has a clear passion for optometry and a strong understanding of what it means to provide patient-centred care.”
Speaking about receiving the award, Michael said:
“If I’m honest, I am surprised – but honoured – to receive this award.
“I am extremely grateful for having had the opportunity to study at UHI. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the optometry course here has given me a real sense of purpose and has genuinely been life changing. The clinical expertise of the faculty, and the personal and academic support they provided me with as a student, has been exceptional.
“When I was dealing with illness, I feel the faculty went above and beyond to accommodate me. Their understanding and encouragement helped me to continue with my studies, and I remain deeply grateful for that support.
“The highlight of my time at UHI has been the practice and hospital placements. These experiences broadened my understanding of real-world optometry and the many different roles involved and really helped me to think more clearly about the kind of career I hope to pursue.”
The UHI Student of the Year awards celebrate students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement, dedication and impact during their studies, recognising not only academic success but also the personal qualities that contribute to their communities and future professions.
All Student of the Year winners from across the UHI partnership receive a £100 prize and go forward to be considered for the Overall UHI Student of the Year, to be announced later this month.
Michael will formally receive the award at the UHI graduation ceremony at Eden Court in Inverness, on Friday 13 November.
