UHI shinty teams secure double victory at prestigious student tournament
The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) men’s and women’s shinty teams, have both claimed first place at one of the most prestigious events in the student shinty calendar.
Organised by the Highlands and Islands Students’ Association (HISA), students from across the UHI partnership travelled to St Andrews on Wednesday 18 March to compete in the annual Littlejohn and McHue and Porter Tournament, delivered by Scottish Student Sport, and hosted by the University of St Andrews.
Since entering the competition for the first time in 2024, the men’s team has lifted the Littlejohn Vase every year, while the women’s team secured bronze in 2024 and silver in 2025. This continued success underlines the strength and depth of shinty talent across UHI and reflects the sport’s deep cultural roots in our region.
Participation in the tournament was made possible by Kishorn Port Ltd, whose sponsorship since 2024 has helped cover essential costs including travel, equipment and kit.
The event also highlights the continued partnership between UHI and the Camanachd Association, the sport’s governing body, to grow and sustain shinty at student level.
Amanda Fleet, Sports Consultant at HISA and who is responsible for bringing the UHI shinty teams together, said:
“It was a fantastic day, and we are so proud of our students representing UHI and HISA at such a historic and competitive event. It’s even more special that both teams have brought home the trophies this year! The commitment, teamwork and determination shown by both squads has been outstanding, and this success is thoroughly deserved.”
Rachel Cruickshank, UHI women’s team captain, said:
“I am honoured to have captained the women’s team this year and to have had such incredible teammates beside me. To see the team finally lift the cup, after finishing third in our first year and runners-up last year, was truly an emotional experience. There were many tears after a hard-fought final and penalty shootout. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of our coordinator, Amanda Fleet, and we are also grateful to Kishorn Port Ltd for their continued sponsorship of the team.”
