Orion Group gifts engineering scholarships to rising student stars

Issued Tuesday 11 June 2013

Five talented engineering students at the University of the Highlands and Islands are to benefit from scholarship support donated by the Orion Group, a worldwide leader in providing contract and permanent personnel to the engineering industry.

Aimed at students who are completing their first year at university and who are keen to pursue a career in the engineering sector, the scholarship will support them with £1250 each year until they graduate with an honours degree in three years’ time.

This year’s successful students are: James Reade, studying electrical engineering and Sean Fraser, studying engineering systems at North Highland College UHI in Thurso; Larah Ann Macleod and Shaun Graham studying engineering systems at Lews Castle College UHI in Stornoway; and Hannah Barbour studying aircraft engineering at Perth College UHI.

Nuala Boyle, Head of Development at the University of the Highlands and Islands said: "This is a significant gift and investment by the Orion Group and we are delighted companies across the region are supporting the university and its students in this way. “Engineering skills are much sought after in the Highlands and Islands and beyond, particularly in the growing renewables sector. This generous scholarship from Orion Group is a fantastic example of business recognising the benefits of investment in young people in education. These five scholars are worthy recipients and we look forward to supporting them throughout their studies and on into their chosen careers.”

Alan Savage, chairman of Orion Group said: “Investing in the future of engineering is crucial for the industry and something Orion takes very seriously. We are delighted to offer this financial support to scholars and we wish them all the very best in their studies. I look forward to seeing how they progress in the engineering field.”
