Beauty students inspired by industry guest speaker
Hair and beauty students in Thurso recently welcomed Katrina Sutherland from The Country Spa, who visited the department to share her experience of building a successful business in the beauty industry.
During her visit, Katrina spoke about her professional journey, from where it all began through to the experiences, challenges and opportunities that have shaped her career. She offered students an honest insight into working in the beauty sector and shared valuable knowledge gained through years of industry experience, including what it takes to grow and sustain a successful business.
Students found the session both informative and encouraging, gaining first-hand insight into real career pathways and the realities of working within the beauty industry. Opportunities to hear directly from industry professionals help students connect their learning to the wider sector and understand the skills and commitment required beyond the classroom. Reflecting on her visit, Katrina said:
“What a lovely way to spend a morning; talking with our beauty therapists of the future! It was encouraging to see how engaged and enthusiastic they all were and so exciting to hear of their plans. I'm certain they will all enjoy a rewarding and fulfilling career within the beauty industry. Thank you so much for inviting me to meet them all. It really was a privilege to share my story with them. I hope they enjoyed the morning as much as I did!”
Staff highlighted the value of industry visits in supporting student learning and career development. Beauty Lecturer, Laura Gray said:
“Sessions like this help students see how their learning connects directly to the industry. Hearing Katrina’s journey and advice gives them a realistic understanding of career pathways and the skills needed to succeed in the beauty sector.”
Beauty Lecturer, Kirsty Little added:
“We are very grateful to Katrina for taking time out of her busy schedule to come in and speak with our students. Thank you for such an inspiring and motivational talk, staff and students thoroughly enjoyed listening to your journey and insights.”
