UHI Orkney Celebrates LGBTQ+ Month

In celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month, UHI Orkney proudly raised the LGBTQ+ flag on campus, symbolizing our commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The flag, flown outside the main building, stood as a vibrant testament to the celebration of LGBTQ+ history, culture, and achievements.

Captured beautifully by Archaeology PhD student, Holly Young, this photo showcases not only the vibrant colours of the flag but also a rainbow in the sky—a perfect reminder of the beauty in embracing our differences.

The flag, kindly loaned to us by The Orkney Pride group, served as a visible reminder of our dedication to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals are respected and celebrated for their unique identities.

Throughout the month, UHI Orkney also organized various events and initiatives to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ history and issues, fostering meaningful discussions and promoting understanding among students, faculty, and staff.

"We believe that by celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month, we not only honour the past struggles and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community but also inspire a future of greater equality and acceptance," added Kerri Bickmore, Inclusion and Wellbeing Manager.

UHI Orkney remains dedicated to upholding values of diversity, inclusivity, and respect, ensuring that all members of the community feel valued and empowered to thrive.
