'Islands on the Edge of Empire': Assessing the Impact of Imperial Influences in Shaping Perceptions of Identity in Northern Isles Society and Culture, c.1700 - c.1850

Supervised by Dr Kathrin Zickermann, UHI Centre for History, Dr Jim MacPherson, UHI Centre for History, Dr Andrew Mackillop, University of Glasgow

Iain has a passion for Highlands and Islands history with family connections to the Ardnamurchan peninsula and the Isle of Lewis through his paternal grandparents.

Having taught history in secondary schools across Scotland for 30 years, Iain decided to return to part time study with UHI in 2018 while maintaining a full-time teaching job. He undertook the MLitt History of the Highlands and Islands course with Centre for History, graduating with Distinction in September 2022.

Based on original research and making extensive use of the archives in Kirkwall and Lerwick, Iain’s dissertation focused on the impact of the Scottish presbyterian church on Northern Isles society and culture from 1689 to 1800. His PhD research builds on this theme, looking at how imperial influences shaped perceptions of island identity at the height of the British Empire. Iain is interested to see where this research will lead in light of current debate and sensitivities surrounding the place of Orkney and Shetland as part of Scotland and the United Kingdom.

Away from his studies, Iain maintains a part-time online teaching commitment with e-Sgoil (Western Isles Council). He is also a keen tennis player and enjoys watching rugby, football and walking his dogs, Hamish and Flora.

Iain can be contacted at 18020338@uhi.ac.uk.
