Helga Scott will talk about her work with North Ronaldsay Sheep, developing wool products and connections across the North Atlantic. Sandra Towrie from Sanday will discuss the history of community co-operative The Sanday Knitters and knitting as a means to support island economies. And Liz Lovick will share her work with Northern Lace inspired by traditional patterns from Shetland, Fair Isle and Orkney.
We will join the Orkney Library “Yap and Yarn” group who meet every 2 weeks to knit and “yap” at the library throughout the winter months.
This is the fifth “Yarns and Yarns” event organized by the Arctic Island Studies Research (NAISR) Thematic Network of the University of the Arctic. Previous in-person and online events were hosted by knitting groups in Prince Edward Island, St. John’s, NL, Uist in Scotland, and Iceland, with over 100 knitters from all over the North Atlantic - and beyond. The Orkney Library event is co-hosted by UHI Institute for Northern Studies and Robert Gordon University, Orkney.
