Open all ours: Open education, what it means for you and for the university.

This one day event will look at open educational practice and will introduce the forthcoming Open Education Framework. An overview of the preliminary findings from the latest Open Education Survey will also be discussed.

The keynote, titled: Into the Open - exploring the benefits of open education, will be delivered by Lorna M. Campbell, manager of the University of Edinburgh's OER Service will will provide an introduction to the broad domain of open education, including OER, open practice, MOOCs, open knowledge and Wikimedia. Highlighting examples of openness in action from the University of Edinburgh, she will explore how open education and OER can help to expand access to education, widening participation and social inclusion, promoting knowledge transfer and creating a culture of inter-institutional collaboration and sharing.

Session Outline

This event will cover Open Educational Practices and will Open Education more generally. An introduction to the forthcoming Open Education Framework and its potential impact across the university. There will be an opportunity to discuss the preliminary findings from the Open Education Survey that has been running since June and you will be invited to join the newly formed Open Special Interest Group (Open-SIG).

Lorna M. Campbell

The keynote wil be presented by Lorna M. Campbell from the University of Edinburgh.

Lorna has a longstanding personal commitment to supporting open knowledge and open education; she founded the Open Scotland initiative, coordinated the technical strategy of the UKOER Programme, co-chaired the OER16 Open Culture Conference, and she is a Trustee of Wikimedia UK and the Association for Learning Technology. Lorna was also the driving force behind the Scottish Open Education Declaration.  Her blog, Open World, http://lornamcampbell.org/,  features personal reflections on all aspects of open education, and she is an active member of the #femedtech network.  Lorna currently works as a senior learning technology service manager within the University of Edinburgh’s Open Educational Resources Service.

The event will be facilitated by Scott Connor, the Learning and Teaching Academy, Executive Office UHI.

Scott Connor

With a professional background in technology, systems design, learning and project management Scott has been involved with the university of the highlands and islands and its previous incarnations since 1994.

In October 2018 Scott joined the Learning and Teaching Academy with a specific remit for flexible and open learning. This includes the creation of an open education framework for the university in line with the Learning and Teaching Enhancement Strategy.

Scott is an advocate of lifelong learning and has a particular interest in the pedagogies emerging from advances in technology. With a preference for the natural sciences Scott has more recently undertaken Masters degrees in the fields of Social Sciences, Psychology and Criminology before reverting back to studying undergraduate mechanical engineering. Following completion of a Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Tertiary Education in 2016 Scott also achieved fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE).
