Session Outline

Reflection has become a central part in the work of educational professionals and, accordingly, training courses invariably require aspiring lecturers to develop reflective practice skills.  But how much of this carries over into the day-to-day work of busy lecturing staff in tertiary education?  Particularly after the high pressure of the last 18 months, have we had the time to undertake reflection?

For the last year Rob Bray has been carrying out a research project, funded by the UHI Learning and Teaching Academy, that addressed these questions.  Using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, followed by qualitative analysis, results identified not only the reasons why members of staff  use reflective practice but also some of the barriers they faced in doing so.  It additionally identified a surprisingly wide range of different methods that were used.

In this webinar Rob will outline these results and some of their implications – for instance for the ways in which barriers to reflective practice might be overcome.  For reflective practice to be more widely adopted, does there need to be a culture change?   A grassroots-led transformation in attitudes or a top-down policy-based initiative?   The discussion will be opened up to all participants - it is hoped that from this we will identify proposals for further activities.
