Session Outline

In March 2020 the UK went into national lockdown and all continuing teaching support in the college and university sector had to move off-campus. UHI was already a major user of videoconferencing for HE due to it distributed character, but all synchronous learning and teaching now had to be VC delivery. Between 15th December 2020 and 1st March 2021 the Jisc Online Survey tool was used to seek staff and student perspectives on their learning and teaching during this transition. 27 multiple choice and continuous text questions were deployed, gaining responses from 122 staff and 225 students from across the University partnership. Participants were asked to identify their discipline field and role (staff or student), and their personal circumstances and experience of learning and teaching at UHI before and after the start of the Emergency. Significant differences became apparent between staff and students and between different types of students (discipline area, mode of study, gender, and age) in overall satisfaction, and in the types of concerns and enthusiasms they expressed. While statistical associations between different circumstances and behaviours and satisfaction with the VC experience isn’t absolute proof off a causal link this paper will explore the underlying conditions and strategies that probably led to more and less favourable learning and teaching experiences. This has important implications for the use of VC technology in HE going forward, as the Covid Emergency has likely changed both staff and students expectations and aspirations permanently.
