What is BYOD and Why do I need to know?

Please note: These changes below DO NOT apply to our Students.

BYOD or Bring Your Own Device refers to any device that is not managed and enrolled within the UHI tenancy. As these devices are unmanaged they pose a potential threat to UHI data and our users. To protect from these threats, we ensure we meet sector leading standards by being Cyber Essentials (CE) certified.

As these standards are ever changing, we must also be ever changing. As a result to changes within CE, we are changing how our users access our systems from a personal laptop/computer/Mac.

What is changing and What do I need to do?

If you access UHI systems, such as MyDay, Brightspace, Microsoft Office Apps inc. Outlook, Teams etc on a personal/non UHI managed device, you must ensure your device meets the requirements outlined in our BYOD policy and we require you to complete a short questionnaire.

You only need to complete this form if you are using your own Windows, Linux, or Apple MacOS laptop or desktop.

Please read and and ensure you understand our BYOD Policy, which includes requirements such as:

  • Using security features such as a PIN, password, passphrase, or automatic screen lock when the device is not in use.
  • Keeping the operating system and all software fully up to date.
  • Activating and using an encryption service and install an anti-virus system.
  • Making your device available for a Cyber Essentials audit if requested.

If your device meets the requirements, please complete the BYOD form.

Who does this affect? content

Who does this affect?

This is a requirement for all of our Staff and many of our External account holders who access UHI systems from a non UHI managed device.

If you only access UHI systems on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet you also do not need to complete the BYOD form.

This does not affect our Students.

You will know for certain if you are within scope as you will also be prompted when you try to login to a UHI system from an unmanaged device. We require you to select accept from the bottom of the prompt, then complete the BYOD form.

Browsers today store some of your login information for the various sites you visit and access. This is the same with UHI systems. This means sometimes, your browser will automatically use your personal or work account to access UHI systems, which of course will not work.

In this case, it might be worth setting up different browser profiles. You can find guidance on how to you can do this within the help pages of your browser:

I am still getting prompts when I log in.
