Covering Letters

content

A covering letter is normally sent/emailed alongside a CV in order to introduce yourself and your CV to the employer.

Top tips :

  • Address your letter to a specific employer and if possible, a named person within the organisation
  • No longer than one side of A4 (Academic letters can be longer)
  • Outline the reason you are writing to them – including the work you are applying for and where you saw it advertised
  • Identify why you want to work for the employer
  • Demonstrate why the employer should employ you - this is done by providing specific details of your relevant experience, skills or knowledge
  • Spell check and proof read – mistakes can be costly!
  • Keep a copy so you remember what you said

Remember an excellent CV can be ruined by a poor covering letter... don’t let that happen to you.
