Passkeys
Changes to your authentication (MFA) at UHI
A simpler, safer way to sign in to UHI
Microsoft is changing the way you sign in. SMS text messages and phone calls are being retired as authentication methods, and UHI is moving towards passkeys.
What is a passkey?
A passkey is a modern, secure alternative to passwords and verification codes.
Instead of waiting for a text message or typing in a code, you can use something you already use to unlock your device — such as your fingerprint, face recognition or PIN.
Passkeys are also much harder for an attacker to steal through a fake login page.
More choice — not less
You don't necessarily need a smartphone or Microsoft Authenticator to use a passkey.
Depending on the devices and software you use, your passkey could be stored:
- On your computer or laptop, using its built-in passkey support
- On your phone or tablet
- In Microsoft Authenticator
- In a password manager, such as Bitwarden, 1Password, Google Password Manager or Apple Passwords/iCloud Keychain
This means you can choose an option that works with the devices you already use.
Already using Microsoft Authenticator?
There's no need to stop using Authenticator just because passkeys are being introduced. You can continue to approve sign-ins as you do now, and you'll also have the option of setting up a passkey.
Currently using text messages or phone calls?
You'll need to set up a different sign-in method. Microsoft is retiring its SMS and voice-call authentication service on 28th January 2027.
If text messages or phone calls are currently your only way of completing MFA, please set up Microsoft Authenticator or a passkey before then.
Why are we changing?
Passkeys are both easier to use and more secure.
They can remove the need to remember and type passwords, there's no verification code to copy from a text message, and they're designed to protect you from fake login pages and phishing attacks.
The technology behind them is increasingly becoming the normal way of signing in securely online.
